Ma On Shan St. Joseph's Secondary School is a Catholic co-educational aided secondary school founded in 1996 by the Franciscan Order. Its motto, Revere God, Love People, Be Erudite and Practise Earnestly, reflects Catholic and Franciscan education ideals. The school was established to serve the growing Ma On Shan community and emphasizes faith formation, positive values, academic learning, student support, service and balanced development.

Medium of Instruction & Curriculum

Chinese is the primary Medium of Instruction (MOI).

Curriculum: Secondary education comprises three years of junior secondary and three years of senior secondary education leading to the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination.

Teaching Language Policy: Focusing on the development of biliteracy and trilingualism, students are grouped with reference to their language ability for studying Mathematics, Integrated Science, Computer Literacy, Social Science (Geography and Citizenship, Economics and Society) by using English as the medium of instruction or with extended learning activities in English in junior secondary so that they can prepare for the corresponding subjects in senior secondary. School has also put effort in creating a language-rich environment of Putonghua and English such as announcements only in English and Putonghua, various elite and consolidation classes and benchmark test arrangement.

Secondary One Admission

The Secondary School Places Allocation (SSPA) System is Hong Kong's official mechanism for distributing subsidized Secondary One places to primary school graduates. The allocation operates in two distinct, consecutive phases. First, the Discretionary Places (DP) stage allows students to apply directly to individual schools based on academic and interview merits. Second, remaining places are funneled into the Central Allocation (CA) stage, which is subdivided into Part A (unrestricted, territory-wide choices) and Part B (restricted, district-based choices). This is an aided school, the most common type of secondary school in Hong Kong. Aided schools account for approximately 76% of all secondary schools and receive government funding to provide free secondary education. No school fee is charged. By comparison, around 12% are DSS schools, 6% are government schools, and 5% are private schools. Only DSS and private schools generally charge school fees.

School Facilities

The school has a beautiful and spacious campus with excellent facilities, which make the school an ideal environment for learning. There are the Triangular Garden, fish pond, English Square, Mount Mary, St. Francis Garden, the Prayer room, etc. The school has STEAM Lab, I. T. Innovation Lab, Campus Tv, Gallery of School History, Dancing room, etc. All classrooms are air-conditioned and well equipped with computer facilities, electronic whiteboards, infra-red audio visual equipment, etc.
