St. Joseph's College

Founded in 1875 by the De La Salle Brothers, St. Joseph's College is one of Hong Kong's oldest Catholic boys' schools and a long-standing English-medium institution. Its Lasallian identity is expressed through Labore et Virtute, or Labour and Virtue, and a tradition of academic preparation, service and brotherhood. The Kennedy Road campus also forms part of Hong Kong's historic educational landscape, while the college continues to report a strong university-entrance tradition.

Medium of Instruction & Curriculum

English is the primary Medium of Instruction (MOI).

Curriculum: Secondary education comprises three years of junior secondary and three years of senior secondary education leading to the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination.

Teaching Language Policy: Besides Chinese Language, Putonghua, Chinese History, Japanese and French, all lessons are conducted in English. In order to enable students to have a balanced development in English, Chinese and PTH, the Language Policy Committee has closely coordinated the development of these language subjects in the past few years.

Secondary One Admission

The Secondary School Places Allocation (SSPA) System is Hong Kong's official mechanism for distributing subsidized Secondary One places to primary school graduates. The allocation operates in two distinct, consecutive phases. First, the Discretionary Places (DP) stage allows students to apply directly to individual schools based on academic and interview merits. Second, remaining places are funneled into the Central Allocation (CA) stage, which is subdivided into Part A (unrestricted, territory-wide choices) and Part B (restricted, district-based choices). The table below summarises past years’ allocation figures, including DP places, Central Allocation Part A and Part B places, reserved places, and total places.

School Fees

This is an aided school, the most common type of secondary school in Hong Kong. Aided schools account for approximately 76% of all secondary schools and receive government funding to provide free secondary education. No school fee is charged. By comparison, around 12% are DSS schools, 6% are government schools, and 5% are private schools. Only DSS and private schools generally charge school fees.
